American politician and businessman

Willard Mitt Romney (born March 12, 1947) is an American politician and businessman serving as the junior United States Senator from Utah since January 2019. He was the 70th Governor of Massachusetts from 2003 to 2007 and the Republican Party's nominee for President of the United States in the 2012 United States presidential election.

Early Life and Education

Mitt Romney was born in Detroit, Michigan, to George W. Romney, a former Governor of Michigan and HUD Secretary, and Lenore Romney. He was raised in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, and attended the prestigious Cranbrook Schools. Romney served as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in France for two and a half years.

Romney earned his Bachelor of Arts in English from Brigham Young University in 1971. He then pursued a joint Juris Doctor and Master of Business Administration degree from Harvard University, graduating in 1975.

Business Career

Romney began his career in business at the Boston Consulting Group, where he worked as a management consultant. He later joined Bain & Company, eventually becoming its CEO. In 1984, he co-founded and led the spin-off company Bain Capital, a highly successful private equity investment firm.

Political Career

Governor of Massachusetts

Romney was elected as the Governor of Massachusetts in 2002. During his tenure, he implemented a series of reforms, including the landmark Massachusetts health care reform, which provided near-universal health insurance access through state-level subsidies and mandates.

2012 Presidential Campaign

Romney secured the Republican nomination for President of the United States in the 2012 United States presidential election. He chose Paul Ryan as his running mate. Despite a vigorous campaign, Romney lost the election to the incumbent, Barack Obama.

United States Senator from Utah

In 2018, Romney announced his candidacy for the United States Senate from Utah. He won the election and took office on January 3, 2019. As a senator, Romney has been known for his occasional dissent from the party line, notably voting to convict Donald Trump during his first impeachment trial.

Personal Life

Romney married Ann Romney in 1969. They have five sons: Tagg, Matt, Josh, Ben, and Craig. Romney is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and has held various leadership positions within the church.
