Mineral Water

Mineral water (/ˈmɪnərəl ˈwɔːtər/) is a type of water that contains minerals or other dissolved substances that alter its taste or give it therapeutic value. Salts, sulfur compounds, and gases are among the substances commonly found in mineral water.

Etymology

The term "mineral water" is derived from the Latin words "minera" meaning "something mined" and "aqua" meaning "water". The term was used to describe water that was obtained from natural sources, particularly springs, which were often located in former mining areas.

Types of Mineral Water

There are two types of mineral water: sparkling mineral water and still mineral water. Sparkling mineral water is infused with carbon dioxide gas under pressure, which creates a fizzy drink. Still mineral water, on the other hand, does not have any added carbon dioxide.

Health Benefits

Mineral water is often high in calcium, magnesium, and iron, which are all essential nutrients for human health. It can also contain other beneficial minerals and electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, and bicarbonate.

Regulations

In many countries, including the European Union and the United States, mineral water is subject to strict standards to ensure its safety and quality. These standards cover everything from the source of the water to the types and amounts of minerals it can contain.
