A renowned wine producer in Moldova

Mileștii Mici is a winery located in the Republic of Moldova, renowned for its extensive underground wine cellars and vast collection of wines. Situated in the commune of Mileștii Mici, approximately 18 kilometers south of the capital city, Chișinău, it is a significant attraction for wine enthusiasts and tourists alike.

History[edit]

The history of Mileștii Mici dates back to the Soviet era, when the underground galleries were initially excavated for the extraction of limestone. These tunnels, stretching over 200 kilometers, were later repurposed for wine storage due to their ideal conditions for aging wine, including consistent temperatures and humidity levels.

The Cellars[edit]

The Mileștii Mici cellars are the largest in the world, holding the Guinness World Records title for the largest wine collection. The cellars house approximately 2 million bottles of wine, with the oldest dating back to 1969. The underground labyrinth is divided into various "streets" named after different types of wine, such as Cabernet, Aligote, and Feteasca.

The cellars maintain a constant temperature of 12–14 °C and a humidity level of 85–95%, which are ideal conditions for the storage and maturation of wine. Visitors can explore the cellars by car or on foot, guided through the dimly lit tunnels lined with oak barrels and bottles.

Wine Production[edit]

Mileștii Mici produces a wide range of wines, including both red and white varieties. The winery is known for its traditional methods of wine production, which include the use of local grape varieties such as Rara Neagră, Fetească Neagră, and Fetească Albă. The wines are aged in oak barrels, which impart unique flavors and aromas.
