Mesterolone

Mesterolone, pronounced as /mɛstɛˈroʊloʊn/, is a synthetic androgen and anabolic steroid (AAS) which is used primarily in the treatment of low testosterone levels. It is also used to treat male infertility and impotence.

Etymology

The term "Mesterolone" is derived from the combination of the words "mester", which is a prefix used in organic chemistry to denote a methyl group, and "olone", which is a suffix used in steroid nomenclature to denote a ketone group at the 17-position.

Usage

Mesterolone is used in the treatment of androgen deficiency in male hypogonadism, anemia, and to support male fertility among other indications. It is taken by mouth.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Mesterolone include symptoms of masculinization like acne, increased hair growth, voice changes, and increased sexual desire. The drug is a synthetic androgen and anabolic steroid and hence is an agonist of the androgen receptor (AR), the biological target of androgens like testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
