Mesocortical pathway
Mesocortical Pathway
The Mesocortical Pathway (pronunciation: me-so-cor-ti-cal path-way) is a significant component of the dopaminergic system in the brain. It is one of the four major dopamine pathways in the brain.
Etymology
The term "Mesocortical Pathway" is derived from the Greek words "mesos" meaning middle, "kortikos" meaning relating to the cortex, and "pathos" meaning suffering or disease. The term thus refers to the pathway that connects the middle part of the brain to the cortex.
Function
The Mesocortical Pathway originates in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and extends to the prefrontal cortex. It is involved in the regulation of cognition, emotion, and especially in motivational and emotional responses to stress.
Clinical Significance
Alterations in the function of the Mesocortical Pathway have been implicated in several psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia, depression, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
