Mavacoxib
Mavacoxib is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used in veterinary medicine to treat pain and inflammation in dogs. It is marketed under the brand name Trocoxil.
Pharmacology[edit]
Mavacoxib works by inhibiting the enzyme cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), which is involved in the production of prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are chemicals in the body that cause inflammation and pain. By inhibiting COX-2, mavacoxib reduces the production of these chemicals, thereby reducing inflammation and pain.
Uses[edit]
Mavacoxib is used to treat chronic pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis in dogs. It is also used to manage pain and inflammation after surgery.
Side Effects[edit]
Like other NSAIDs, mavacoxib can cause side effects. These may include vomiting, diarrhea, decreased appetite, and lethargy. In rare cases, it can cause serious side effects such as kidney damage, liver damage, and gastrointestinal ulcers.
Contraindications[edit]
Mavacoxib should not be used in dogs with known hypersensitivity to it or other NSAIDs. It should also not be used in dogs with severe kidney or liver disease, or in dogs that are dehydrated, on diuretic therapy, or have existing gastrointestinal ulcers.
