Matthew Meselson

Matthew Meselson (born May 24, 1930) is an American molecular biologist and geneticist who has made significant contributions to the field of molecular biology. He is best known for his work on the Meselson-Stahl experiment, which provided strong evidence for the semiconservative replication of DNA.
Early Life and Education[edit]
Matthew Meselson was born in Denver, Colorado. He attended the University of Chicago, where he earned his bachelor's degree in liberal arts. He later pursued graduate studies at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), where he received his Ph.D. in chemistry under the supervision of Linus Pauling.
Career and Research[edit]
Meselson's early work focused on the structure and replication of DNA. In 1958, along with Franklin Stahl, he conducted the Meselson-Stahl experiment, which demonstrated that DNA replication is semiconservative. This experiment is considered one of the most beautiful experiments in biology and provided crucial evidence for the Watson and Crick model of DNA.
After completing his Ph.D., Meselson joined the faculty at Harvard University, where he continued his research on DNA and genetics. He has also been involved in studies on molecular evolution and the mechanisms of genetic recombination.
Public Policy and Advocacy[edit]
In addition to his scientific research, Meselson has been active in public policy, particularly in the area of biological weapons control. He has served as an advisor to various governmental and international organizations on issues related to biological warfare and bioterrorism.
Awards and Honors[edit]
Matthew Meselson has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to science, including:
- The National Medal of Science
- The Lasker Award
- The Watson Medal from the Genetics Society of America
Personal Life[edit]
Meselson is married to Jeanne Guillemin, a sociologist and expert on biological weapons. They have collaborated on several projects related to the history and control of biological weapons.
