MIBG Scan

MIBG scan (pronounced as /em aɪ biː dʒiː skæn/) is a type of medical imaging procedure used primarily in the diagnosis and monitoring of certain types of cancer.

Etymology

The term "MIBG" stands for metaiodobenzylguanidine. It is a compound that can be labeled with radioactive iodine and used to visualize certain types of tumors.

Procedure

During a MIBG scan, a small amount of radioactive MIBG is injected into the patient's bloodstream. The MIBG is taken up by certain types of cells, including some cancer cells. The patient is then scanned with a special camera that can detect the radiation emitted by the MIBG. This allows doctors to see where the MIBG has been taken up in the body, which can help them locate tumors.

Uses

MIBG scans are most commonly used to diagnose and monitor neuroblastoma, a type of cancer that often affects children. They can also be used to diagnose and monitor pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma, which are rare types of tumors that can occur in adults.
