Luiz Henrique Mandetta

Luiz Henrique Mandetta (born November 30, 1964) is a Brazilian physician and politician. He served as the Minister of Health of Brazil from January 1, 2019, to April 16, 2020, under the administration of President Jair Bolsonaro.
Early Life and Education[edit]
Mandetta was born in Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul. He graduated in medicine from the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS) and specialized in orthopedics at the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP). He also completed a postgraduate course in health management at the Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV).
Medical Career[edit]
Before entering politics, Mandetta worked as an orthopedist and pediatrician. He was the director of the orthopedics and traumatology service at the Santa Casa de Campo Grande and served as a consultant for the Brazilian Society of Orthopedics and Traumatology.
Political Career[edit]
Mandetta began his political career as the Secretary of Health of Campo Grande from 2005 to 2010. He was elected as a federal deputy for Mato Grosso do Sul in 2010 and re-elected in 2014. During his tenure in the Chamber of Deputies, he was known for his work on health-related issues and was a member of the Parliamentary Front for Health.
Minister of Health[edit]
In 2019, Mandetta was appointed as the Minister of Health by President Jair Bolsonaro. His tenure was marked by efforts to improve the Brazilian healthcare system and manage the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil. Mandetta advocated for social distancing measures and the use of scientific guidelines to combat the pandemic, which eventually led to disagreements with President Bolsonaro. He was dismissed from his position on April 16, 2020.
Personal Life[edit]
Mandetta is married and has two children. He is known for his dedication to public health and his advocacy for evidence-based medical practices.
