List of administrative districts in India

The districts of India are administrative divisions of states and union territories. As of 2023, there are a total of 773 districts in India. Each district is administered by a District Magistrate, an officer of the Indian Administrative Service. The districts are further subdivided into tehsils or talukas.

History

The concept of districts in India dates back to the British Raj, when the country was divided into administrative units for better governance. Post-independence, the states and union territories of India retained the district as the primary administrative unit.

Administration

Each district is headed by a District Magistrate or Deputy Commissioner, who is responsible for maintaining law and order, implementing government schemes, and overseeing the general administration. The district administration is supported by various officers from different departments such as Police, Revenue, Health, and Education.
