Indonesia, a Southeast Asian nation made up of thousands of volcanic islands, is home to hundreds of ethnic groups speaking many different languages. This diversity is reflected in the country's cuisine, which is influenced by a variety of cultures, traditions, and ingredients. This article provides a list of some of the most popular and traditional Indonesian dishes.
Rice Dishes
Nasi Goreng - Often considered the national dish of Indonesia, Nasi Goreng is a fried rice dish typically flavored with kecap manis (sweet soy sauce), shallots, garlic, tamarind and chili and accompanied by other ingredients, mainly egg, chicken and prawns.
Nasi Padang - Named after the city of Padang in West Sumatra, Nasi Padang is a meal with steamed rice served with various choices of pre-cooked dishes.
Nasi Lemak - A Malay fragrant rice dish cooked in coconut milk and pandan leaf, often served for breakfast.
Noodle Dishes
Mie Goreng - A flavorful and often spicy fried noodle dish, Mie Goreng is commonly made with thin yellow noodles fried with onion, garlic, soy sauce and a variety of other ingredients.
Bakmi - A wheat-based noodle dish that is usually served with a simple soup and a variety of toppings.
Meat Dishes
Satay - A popular meat skewer dish, Satay can be made from a variety of meats including chicken, goat, mutton, beef, pork, fish, tofu, or even eggs. The skewers are usually grilled or barbecued and served with a variety of sauces, most often with peanut sauce.
Rendang - Originating from the Minangkabau region in West Sumatra, Rendang is a spicy meat dish usually made from beef slow-cooked in coconut milk and a mixture of lemongrass, galangal, garlic, turmeric, ginger and chilies.
Seafood Dishes
Ikan Bakar - Ikan Bakar is a general term that refers to various kinds of grilled fish and other forms of seafood, including squid and shrimp.
Pepes - A method of cooking using banana leaves as food wrappings. The main ingredient can be fish, mushroom, tofu, or oncom (fermented food).
Desserts and Sweets
Klepon - Klepon is a sweet dessert made from glutinous rice flour filled with palm sugar and coated in grated coconut.
Es Teler - A fruit cocktail, Es Teler includes avocado, coconut meat, cincau, jackfruit and other fruits served with coconut milk, sweetened condensed milk, Pandanus amaryllifolius leaf (normally in the form of cocopandan syrup), and a tiny amount of salt.
