Lethocerus indicus
Lethocerus indicus is a species of giant water bug in the family Belostomatidae. It is commonly known as the Indian Toe-Biter or Indian Giant Water Bug. This species is native to South Asia and Southeast Asia, and is one of the largest insects in the world.
Description[edit]
Lethocerus indicus is a large insect, with adults typically reaching lengths of 7–12 cm. The body is elongated and flattened, with a brownish coloration that provides camouflage in its aquatic environment. The front legs are adapted for capturing prey, and the hind legs are flattened for swimming. The insect has a pair of large, bulbous eyes and a short, pointed beak used for piercing and sucking.
Habitat and Distribution[edit]
Lethocerus indicus is found in a wide range of freshwater habitats, including ponds, marshes, and slow-moving rivers. It is most commonly found in warm, tropical regions of South Asia and Southeast Asia, including countries such as India, Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia.
Diet[edit]
The diet of Lethocerus indicus primarily consists of small aquatic animals, including fish, amphibians, and other insects. It is an ambush predator, lying in wait for prey to come within reach before striking with its powerful front legs.
Reproduction[edit]
The reproductive behavior of Lethocerus indicus is notable for its role reversal. The female lays eggs on the back of the male, who carries them until they hatch. This form of parental care is unusual among insects and is a key aspect of the species' life history.
Human Interaction[edit]
In some parts of its range, Lethocerus indicus is considered a delicacy and is collected for human consumption. It is also sometimes used in traditional medicine.
