Kidney anatomy
Kidney Anatomy
The kidney is a vital organ in the human body, responsible for filtering waste products from the blood and excreting them in the form of urine. The anatomy of the kidney is complex, with several distinct structures each playing a crucial role in its function.
Structure
The kidney is bean-shaped and approximately the size of a fist. It is located in the abdomen, just below the rib cage. Each person typically has two kidneys, one on each side of the spine.
Renal Capsule
The outermost layer of the kidney is the renal capsule, a thin, tough layer of fibrous tissue that protects the inner structures of the kidney.
Renal Cortex
Beneath the renal capsule is the renal cortex, a layer of tissue that contains the majority of the kidney's nephrons. Nephrons are the functional units of the kidney, where blood is filtered to remove waste products and excess substances.
Renal Medulla
The renal medulla is the innermost part of the kidney, composed of several cone-shaped renal pyramids. These pyramids contain the Loop of Henle and the collecting ducts, which play a crucial role in the concentration and reabsorption of water from the urine.
Renal Pelvis
The renal pelvis is a funnel-shaped structure that collects the urine produced by the nephrons and channels it into the ureters, which carry the urine to the bladder for storage and eventual elimination.
Function
The primary function of the kidney is to filter waste products and excess substances from the blood, which are then excreted as urine. This process is vital for maintaining the body's chemical balance and blood pressure.
Clinical significance
Understanding the anatomy of the kidney is crucial in the diagnosis and treatment of various kidney diseases, such as kidney stones, kidney infections, and chronic kidney disease. It is also essential in the field of nephrology, the branch of medicine that deals with kidney health.
