Kashi (company)

From WikiMD's Medical Encyclopedia

Kashi is an American-based producer of whole grain cereals and other plant-based foods sourced from regular farming practices. Founded in San Diego in 1984, the company makes over 90 products sold in the U.S. and Canada. Their product line includes cereals, bars, waffles, cookies, crackers, granola, protein powder, and entrees.

History[edit]

Kashi was founded in October 1984 by Philip and Gayle Tauber. The company name is a blend of "kashruth", or kosher/pure food, and "Kushi", the last name of the founder of American macrobiotics. In 2000, the Kellogg Company purchased Kashi. The company's original cereal was identified by the tagline "Seven Whole Grains on a Mission".

Products[edit]

Kashi's products are made from ingredients including seven whole grains and sesame. They are marketed as being natural and free of artificial preservatives and ingredients. The product line includes cereal, granola bars, waffles, cookies, crackers, granola, protein powder, and entrees.

Controversies[edit]

In 2012, a controversy arose over the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in Kashi's products. In response, Kashi announced in 2015 that by the end of 2015, all its products in the US would be Non-GMO Project Verified.
