History[edit]

KZSU was founded in 1947 by a group of Stanford students. Initially, it was a carrier current station, which meant it could only be heard on the Stanford campus. In 1964, KZSU began broadcasting on the FM band, allowing it to reach a wider audience in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Programming[edit]

KZSU is a freeform station, meaning that DJs have significant freedom in choosing the content they broadcast. The station's programming includes a wide variety of music genres, such as jazz, hip hop, rock, classical, and electronic music. In addition to music, KZSU airs news programs, sports coverage, and public affairs shows.

Music[edit]

KZSU's music programming is eclectic and diverse. DJs are encouraged to explore different genres and introduce listeners to new and lesser-known artists. The station has a large music library that includes vinyl records, CDs, and digital files.

News and Public Affairs[edit]

KZSU produces several news and public affairs programs that cover local, national, and international issues. These programs often feature interviews with experts, community leaders, and Stanford faculty members.

Sports[edit]

KZSU provides live coverage of Stanford University sports, including football, basketball, and other athletic events. The station's sports department also produces analysis and commentary shows.

Staff and Volunteers[edit]

KZSU is primarily run by Stanford students, but it also includes contributions from alumni and community members. The station offers training for new DJs and volunteers, helping them develop skills in broadcasting, production, and journalism.

Facilities[edit]

KZSU's studios are located in the basement of Memorial Auditorium on the Stanford campus. The station is equipped with modern broadcasting equipment, including digital audio workstations and a large music library.
