Joseph Grasset

Joseph Grasset (18 March 1849 – 7 July 1918) was a French neurologist and parapsychologist. He was born in Montpellier, France, and is known for his contributions to the field of neurology and his work on hypnosis and spiritualism.

Early Life and Education

Grasset studied medicine at the University of Montpellier, where he earned his medical degree in 1873. He later became a professor of clinical medicine at the same university. His early work focused on neurological disorders and he made significant contributions to the understanding of various neurological diseases.

Contributions to Neurology

Grasset is best known for his work in neurology, particularly his research on epilepsy, hysteria, and neuropathies. He developed the "Grasset's sign," a clinical sign used to diagnose certain types of neurological conditions. His book, The Semi-Insane and the Semi-Responsible, published in 1907, explored the relationship between mental illness and criminal behavior.

Parapsychology and Hypnosis

In addition to his work in neurology, Grasset was interested in parapsychology and hypnosis. He conducted experiments on telepathy and clairvoyance, and he was a member of several societies dedicated to the study of psychic phenomena. His book, The Marvels Beyond Science, published in 1904, delved into these topics and discussed the scientific investigation of supernatural phenomena.

Legacy

Grasset's work had a lasting impact on both neurology and parapsychology. He was a pioneer in the study of neurological disorders and his research helped to advance the understanding of mental health and psychic phenomena. He passed away in Montpellier in 1918.
