Jerry Thomas (October 30, 1830 – December 15, 1885) was an American bartender who is considered to be the "father of American mixology". He was a pioneer in the field of cocktail creation and is credited with popularizing many classic cocktails that are still enjoyed today.

Early Life

Jerry Thomas was born in Sackets Harbor, New York. Little is known about his early life, but he eventually moved to California during the California Gold Rush in the early 1850s. It was during this time that he began to develop his skills as a bartender.

Career

Thomas worked in various bars across the United States, including in New York City, San Francisco, and New Orleans. He became well-known for his showmanship and creativity behind the bar. One of his most famous tricks was the "Blue Blazer," a flaming drink that he would pour back and forth between two mugs.

In 1862, Thomas published How to Mix Drinks; or, The Bon-Vivant's Companion, the first known book on cocktail recipes. This book is considered a seminal work in the field of mixology and includes recipes for many classic cocktails, such as the Martini, the Tom Collins, and the Whiskey Sour.

Legacy
