James G. Blaine

James Gillespie Blaine (January 31, 1830 – January 27, 1893) was an American statesman and Republican politician who represented Maine in the United States House of Representatives from 1863 to 1876, serving as Speaker of the House from 1869 to 1875. He also served as a United States Senator from Maine from 1876 to 1881 and twice as United States Secretary of State, first under President James A. Garfield and then under President Benjamin Harrison.
Early Life and Education[edit]
James G. Blaine was born in West Brownsville, Pennsylvania. He attended Washington & Jefferson College in Washington, Pennsylvania, where he graduated in 1847. After graduation, he moved to Maine and became a newspaper editor.
Political Career[edit]
Blaine's political career began in the Maine House of Representatives, where he served from 1858 to 1862. He was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1862 and served until 1876. During his time in the House, he became Speaker in 1869, a position he held until 1875.
In 1876, Blaine was elected to the United States Senate, where he served until 1881. He was a leading figure in the Republican Party and was known for his advocacy of a strong national government and his support for the Union during the American Civil War.
Secretary of State[edit]
Blaine served as United States Secretary of State under President James A. Garfield in 1881 and again under President Benjamin Harrison from 1889 to 1892. During his tenure, he was a proponent of the Pan-American movement, which sought to improve relations and cooperation among the nations of the Americas.
Presidential Campaigns[edit]
Blaine was a candidate for the Republican nomination for President in 1876, 1880, and 1884. He secured the nomination in 1884 but was defeated in the general election by Grover Cleveland.
