Jagiellonian University



Jagiellonian University (Polish: Uniwersytet Jagielloński) is a public research university located in Kraków, Poland. Founded in 1364 by Casimir III the Great, it is the oldest university in Poland and one of the oldest surviving universities in the world. The university is often regarded as Poland's most prestigious academic institution.
History[edit]
The university was established in 1364 by King Casimir III the Great as the Kraków Academy. It was modeled after the University of Bologna and the University of Paris. The university initially had three faculties: liberal arts, medicine, and law. In 1400, King Władysław II Jagiełło re-established the university, and it was renamed the Jagiellonian University in honor of the Jagiellonian dynasty.
During the Renaissance, the university became a significant center of humanism and science. Notable scholars such as Nicolaus Copernicus studied there. The university faced challenges during the Partitions of Poland but continued to operate and contribute to Polish culture and education.
