Isotel
A medication used in the treatment of hypertension
Isotel is a pharmaceutical drug primarily used in the management of hypertension (high blood pressure). It belongs to a class of medications known as beta blockers, which work by blocking the effects of the hormone epinephrine, also known as adrenaline. This action helps to slow down the heart rate and reduce blood pressure, thereby decreasing the risk of stroke, heart attack, and other cardiovascular complications.
Mechanism of Action
Isotel functions by inhibiting the beta-adrenergic receptors in the heart and blood vessels. By blocking these receptors, Isotel reduces the heart's workload and helps it to beat more regularly. This leads to a decrease in blood pressure and heart rate, which is beneficial in treating hypertension and preventing related cardiovascular events.
Indications
Isotel is primarily indicated for the treatment of:
- Hypertension
- Angina pectoris
- Heart failure
- Prevention of myocardial infarction
Dosage and Administration
The dosage of Isotel varies depending on the condition being treated and the patient's response to the medication. It is typically administered orally, with or without food. The dosage must be individualized and adjusted according to the patient's needs and response.
Side Effects
Common side effects of Isotel may include:
Serious side effects, although rare, can include:
- Bradycardia (slow heart rate)
- Hypotension (low blood pressure)
- Bronchospasm
Contraindications
Isotel is contraindicated in patients with:
- Severe bradycardia
- Asthma or severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Cardiogenic shock
- Second- or third-degree heart block
Drug Interactions
Isotel may interact with other medications, including:
- Other antihypertensive drugs
- Antiarrhythmic agents
- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
