Midwestern United States

The Midwestern United States (also referred to as the American Midwest or simply the Midwest) is one of four census regions of the United States Census Bureau (also known as "Region 2"). It occupies the northern central part of the United States. It was officially named the "North Central Region" by the Census Bureau until 1984.

Etymology

The term "Midwest" comes from the mid-19th century. It is a compound of "mid-" (middle) and "west", as the region is located towards the west of the United States, but not on the far western coast.
