Indian subcontinent
Indian Subcontinent
The Indian Subcontinent (pronunciation: /ˈɪndiən ˌsʌbkənˈtɪnənt/) is a southern region of Asia, mostly situated on the Indian Plate and projecting southwards into the Indian Ocean from the Himalayas.
Etymology
The term "Indian Subcontinent" comes from the geographical features of the area - it is a significant part of the larger continent of Asia, but is separated by the formidable Himalayan mountain range. The prefix "sub-" is Latin for "under" or "below", hence the term subcontinent signifies that it is a part of the continent, but distinct and below the rest of the continent.
