Dairy farming (pronunciation: /ˈdeɪri ˈfɑːrmɪŋ/) is a branch of agriculture that involves the long-term production of milk, which is processed (either on the farm or at a dairy plant, either of which may be called a dairy) for eventual sale of a dairy product.

Etymology

The term "dairy" comes from Old English dæge, meaning "female servant" or "dairymaid", and ultimately from Proto-Germanic *daigjon (meaning "to knead dough"). The word "farming" is derived from Middle English ferme, meaning "fixed payment", from Old English feorm, "provision, food, supplies, possessions, rent, farm".

History

Dairy farming has been part of agriculture for thousands of years. Historically it was one part of small, diverse farms. In the last century or so larger farms concentrating on dairy production have emerged.

Process

The process of dairy farming involves various stages, including the rearing of cattle, the production of milk, and the processing of milk into dairy products. These stages are often carried out on a dairy farm.
