Huey Lewis (born Hugh Anthony Cregg III; July 5, 1950) is an American singer, songwriter, and actor. He is best known as the lead vocalist and harmonica player for the band Huey Lewis and the News, a group that achieved widespread fame during the 1980s with a series of hit songs and albums.

Early Life[edit]

Huey Lewis was born in New York City and raised in Marin County, California. He attended and graduated from Lawrenceville School in New Jersey before enrolling at Cornell University. However, he left Cornell to pursue a career in music.

Career[edit]

Early Career[edit]

Lewis joined the band Clover in the early 1970s, which played a significant role in the development of his musical career. The band moved to England in 1976 and recorded two albums, but they did not achieve commercial success.

Huey Lewis and the News[edit]

In 1979, Lewis formed the band Huey Lewis and the News. The band released their self-titled debut album in 1980, but it was their third album, Sports (1983), that catapulted them to fame. The album included hit singles such as "The Heart of Rock & Roll" and "I Want a New Drug."

The band's success continued with the release of Fore! in 1986, which included hits like "Stuck with You" and "Hip to Be Square." They also contributed the song "The Power of Love" to the soundtrack of the film Back to the Future (1985), which became one of their most well-known songs.

Solo Work and Acting[edit]

In addition to his work with the News, Lewis has pursued a solo career and has appeared in several films and television shows. Notably, he had a cameo in Back to the Future and appeared in the film Duets (2000).

Personal Life[edit]

Lewis has been open about his struggles with Ménière's disease, a disorder of the inner ear that can affect hearing and balance. This condition has impacted his ability to perform live.
