Back to the Future
Back to the Future is a 1985 science fiction film directed by Robert Zemeckis and written by Zemeckis and Bob Gale. It stars Michael J. Fox as teenager Marty McFly, who accidentally travels back in time to 1955, where he meets his future parents and becomes his mother's romantic interest. Christopher Lloyd portrays the eccentric scientist Dr. Emmett "Doc" Brown, inventor of the time-traveling DeLorean, who helps Marty repair history and return to 1985. The film also stars Lea Thompson as Marty's mother, Lorraine Baines McFly, and Crispin Glover as his father, George McFly.
The concept of Back to the Future was rejected by several studios before being picked up by Universal Pictures. Zemeckis' success with the film Romancing the Stone made studios interested in Back to the Future. The film was a critical and commercial success, becoming the highest-grossing film of 1985. It received critical acclaim for its inventive story, cast performances, and its ability to appeal to different generations. The film won an Academy Award for Best Sound Editing, among other honors, and received three additional Academy Award nominations.
Back to the Future has had a significant impact on popular culture and has been followed by two sequels, Back to the Future Part II (1989) and Back to the Future Part III (1990), which form a complete trilogy. The franchise also includes an animated television series, a theme park ride, and several video games, as well as a musical. Its influence can be seen in various films, TV shows, and books, and it has a dedicated fan base.
The film is noted for its detailed plot, which involves themes of fate, love, friendship, and the consequences of changing the past. Its use of time travel has been praised for its creativity and logic, particularly the way it explores the effects of small changes in the past on the future. Back to the Future also popularized the DeLorean DMC-12, which was chosen for its futuristic appearance.
The legacy of Back to the Future includes its recognition as one of the greatest science fiction films ever made. It has been preserved in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."
