Hanging
Hanging
Hanging (/ˈhæŋɪŋ/) is a method of capital punishment where a person is put to death by suspension by the neck.
Etymology
The term "hanging" originates from the Old English hangian, which means "to cause to hang or suspend".
Procedure
The procedure of hanging involves a person being dropped or jerked from a height sufficient enough to break the neck. The actual cause of death often comes from the sudden closure of the carotid arteries, which leads to cerebral hypoxia, or lack of oxygen to the brain.
Types of Hanging
There are four types of hanging: the short drop, the suspension hanging, the standard drop, and the long drop. All of these methods involve the use of a noose which is typically made from a loop of rope secured by a knot.
