Hammersmith

Hammersmith is a district in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, located in west London, England. It is situated 4.3 miles (6.9 km) west-southwest of Charing Cross. It is one of the key commercial and employment centres in Greater London and has been for centuries a major centre of London's Polish community.

History

Hammersmith's name derives from the Old English Hammoder's hythe, meaning "Hammoder's landing place". It was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Hamer smythe. The area has been settled since at least Saxon times.

Geography

Hammersmith is bordered by Shepherd's Bush to the north, Kensington to the east, Chiswick to the west, and Fulham to the south, with which it forms part of the north bank of the River Thames.

Hammersmith is home to several notable landmarks such as the Hammersmith Bridge, Hammersmith Apollo, and the Lyric Theatre.

Hammersmith serves as a major transport hub and has two London Underground stations.
