Graylands Hospital
Graylands Hospital
Graylands Hospital (pronounced: /ˈɡreɪləndz ˈhɒspɪtəl/) is a psychiatric hospital located in Perth, Western Australia. It is the largest stand-alone psychiatric hospital in the state and has been operational since 1977.
Etymology
The name "Graylands" is derived from the original Graylands Estate, a large tract of land that was owned by the Gray family in the late 19th century. The hospital was built on a portion of this land.
History
Graylands Hospital was established in 1977, replacing the outdated Claremont Mental Hospital. It was designed to provide a more modern and humane approach to psychiatric care, with a focus on patient dignity and respect. The hospital has undergone several expansions and renovations over the years to accommodate the growing need for mental health services in Western Australia.
Services
Graylands Hospital provides a range of services for adults with severe and persistent mental health issues. These include inpatient care, outpatient services, and community-based programs. The hospital also has a strong focus on research and training, working closely with the University of Western Australia and other educational institutions.
