Gir Kesar
Gir Kesar
The Gir Kesar is a celebrated variety of mango grown primarily in the Saurashtra region of the Gujarat state in India. Known for its distinct sweet taste and vibrant saffron hue, the Gir Kesar is often referred to as the "Queen of Mangoes." This variety is particularly associated with the Gir Forest, which is also home to the famous Asiatic lion.
History
The cultivation of Gir Kesar mangoes began in the early 20th century. It is believed that the first Kesar mango trees were planted in the foothills of the Girnar mountains. The name "Kesar" was given due to the fruit's saffron-colored pulp, as "kesar" means "saffron" in several Indian languages. Over the years, the Gir Kesar has gained popularity not only in India but also internationally, thanks to its unique flavor and aroma.
Cultivation
Gir Kesar mangoes are primarily grown in the districts of Junagadh and Amreli. The region's climate, characterized by hot summers and moderate rainfall, provides ideal conditions for mango cultivation. The soil in this area is rich in minerals, which contributes to the fruit's distinctive taste.
The mango trees are typically planted in well-drained soil and require regular irrigation, especially during the flowering and fruiting stages. The flowering season begins in December, and the fruits are usually ready for harvest by April or May. Farmers employ traditional methods of cultivation, although some modern techniques have been adopted to increase yield and improve fruit quality.
Characteristics
Gir Kesar mangoes are medium-sized, with a roundish shape and a distinct curve at the tip. The skin is smooth and turns a bright yellow with a reddish tinge when ripe. The flesh is juicy, with a rich, sweet flavor and a hint of acidity. The aroma is strong and pleasant, making it a favorite among mango enthusiasts.
The fruit is often consumed fresh, but it is also used in a variety of culinary applications, including mango lassi, mango chutney, and aamras. Its rich flavor and texture make it ideal for desserts and beverages.
Economic Importance
The Gir Kesar mango is a significant contributor to the local economy in Gujarat. It is a major export product, with demand in countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, and United Arab Emirates. The mangoes are often sold at premium prices due to their quality and limited availability.
The cultivation and sale of Gir Kesar mangoes provide employment to thousands of farmers and workers in the region. The government and local organizations have taken steps to promote the mango and support the farmers through various initiatives.
