gene amplification - (pronounced) (jeen AM-plih-fih-KAY-shun) An increase in the copy number of a gene. There can also be an increase in the RNA and protein made from this gene. Gene amplification is common in cancer cells, and some amplified genes can cause cancer cells to grow or become resistant to anti-cancer drugs. Genes can also be amplified in the laboratory for research purposes
