Frogman Corps (Denmark)
The Frogman Corps (Danish: Frømandskorpset) is an elite special forces unit of the Royal Danish Navy. The unit is known for its rigorous selection process and specialized training, making it one of the most respected and capable special operations forces in the world.
History
The Frogman Corps was established on June 17, 1957, inspired by the British Special Boat Service (SBS) and the United States Navy SEALs. The unit was initially formed to conduct amphibious warfare and reconnaissance missions. Over the years, the Frogman Corps has expanded its capabilities to include counter-terrorism, direct action, and hostage rescue operations.
Selection and Training
The selection process for the Frogman Corps is extremely demanding, with a high attrition rate. Candidates must undergo a series of physical and mental tests, including swimming, diving, parachuting, and survival skills. The training program lasts approximately nine months and includes:
- Basic training in combat diving and underwater demolition
- Advanced training in close-quarters combat and marksmanship
- Specialized courses in mountain warfare, arctic warfare, and urban warfare
Operations
The Frogman Corps has been involved in numerous operations both domestically and internationally. Some of their notable missions include:
- Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan
- Anti-piracy operations off the coast of Somalia
- Counter-terrorism operations in Europe
Equipment
The Frogman Corps is equipped with state-of-the-art gear to perform their missions effectively. This includes:
- Diving equipment such as rebreathers and underwater navigation systems
- Firearms including the Heckler & Koch MP5, SIG Sauer P226, and M4 carbine
- Specialized vehicles like rigid-hulled inflatable boats (RHIBs) and submersibles
