Frank Harris Hitchcock

Frank Harris Hitchcock (October 5, 1867 – August 5, 1935) was an American politician and government official who served as the United States Postmaster General from 1909 to 1913 under President William Howard Taft. He played a significant role in the development of the United States Postal Service and was instrumental in the establishment of the parcel post system.
Early Life and Education[edit]
Frank Harris Hitchcock was born in Columbus, Ohio. He attended Harvard University, where he graduated in 1891. After completing his education, Hitchcock pursued a career in law and politics.
Political Career[edit]
Hitchcock's political career began when he worked as a clerk in the United States Department of Agriculture. He later became involved in the Republican Party and served as the chairman of the Republican National Committee during the 1908 presidential campaign.
Postmaster General[edit]
In 1909, President William Howard Taft appointed Hitchcock as the United States Postmaster General. During his tenure, Hitchcock implemented several significant reforms in the postal system. One of his most notable achievements was the establishment of the parcel post system, which allowed for the shipment of packages through the mail. This innovation greatly expanded the services offered by the United States Postal Service and made it more accessible to the general public.
Hitchcock also worked to improve the efficiency of the postal service by introducing new technologies and streamlining operations. He was a strong advocate for the use of aeroplanes for mail delivery, which eventually led to the development of the airmail service.
Later Life and Legacy[edit]
After leaving his position as United States Postmaster General, Hitchcock continued to be active in politics and public service. He remained a prominent figure in the Republican Party and was involved in various business ventures.
Frank Harris Hitchcock passed away on August 5, 1935. His contributions to the United States Postal Service and his role in the establishment of the parcel post system have left a lasting legacy.
