First Coast
The First Coast is a region of the U.S. state of Florida, located on the Atlantic coast of North Florida. The term "First Coast" was coined in the 1980s as part of a marketing campaign to promote the area, which includes the cities of Jacksonville, St. Augustine, and Fernandina Beach.
History
The First Coast is historically significant as it is home to St. Augustine, the oldest continuously inhabited European-established settlement in the continental United States. Founded in 1565 by Spanish admiral Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, St. Augustine served as the capital of Spanish Florida for over 200 years.
