Fareed Rafiq Zakaria was born on January 20, 1964, in Mumbai, India. He is the son of Rafiq Zakaria, a prominent Indian politician and Islamic scholar, and Fatima Zakaria, a journalist and editor. Zakaria attended the Cathedral and John Connon School in Mumbai before moving to the United States for higher education.
Zakaria earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University in 1986, where he was a member of the Yale Political Union and editor of the "Yale Political Monthly". He later received a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Government from Harvard University in 1993, where he studied under the renowned political scientist Samuel P. Huntington.

Zakaria began his career in journalism as the managing editor of "Foreign Affairs" in 1992, a position he held until 2000. During his tenure, he transformed the publication into a more accessible and widely read journal on international relations.
In 2000, Zakaria joined "Newsweek International" as editor, where he wrote a regular column on international affairs. His work gained widespread recognition for its depth and clarity, earning him a reputation as a leading voice in global analysis.
