Falcine sinus
Anatomical structure in the human brain
The falcine sinus is a rare anatomical variant of the dural venous sinuses located within the falx cerebri, a sickle-shaped fold of dura mater that descends vertically in the longitudinal fissure between the two cerebral hemispheres of the brain.
Anatomy
The falcine sinus is situated within the falx cerebri, which is a dural fold that separates the left and right cerebral hemispheres. It is an uncommon venous channel that can be found in the superior part of the falx cerebri, running parallel to the superior sagittal sinus.
The falcine sinus typically connects the superior sagittal sinus with the straight sinus or the confluence of sinuses. It is considered a persistent embryonic structure, as it is more commonly found in the fetal brain and usually regresses before birth. However, in some individuals, it remains as a functional venous channel into adulthood.
Clinical Significance
The presence of a falcine sinus can have clinical implications, particularly in the context of neurosurgery and neuroimaging. It may be associated with certain congenital conditions, such as vein of Galen malformations or other vascular anomalies. Recognition of a falcine sinus is important during surgical planning to avoid complications related to unexpected venous drainage patterns.
In radiology, the falcine sinus can be identified using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT) scans. It appears as a linear structure within the falx cerebri, and its presence can alter the typical appearance of the dural venous sinuses on imaging studies.
Embryology
During fetal development, the falcine sinus is part of the primitive venous system. It is one of several embryonic venous channels that typically regress as the mature venous sinuses develop. The persistence of the falcine sinus into adulthood is considered an anatomical variant rather than a pathological condition.
