Factor IX

Factor IX (pronounced as "factor nine") is one of the serine proteases of the coagulation system; it belongs to peptidase family S1. Deficiency of this protein causes Hemophilia B. It was formerly known as Christmas factor after Stephen Christmas, the first patient described with a deficiency of this factor.

Etymology

The term "Factor IX" is derived from the Roman numeral for the number nine. It was named as such because it was the ninth factor to be discovered in the blood clotting process. The alternative name, "Christmas factor", is named after Stephen Christmas, the first patient in whom a deficiency of this factor was discovered.

Function

Factor IX is produced by the liver and is involved in the early stages of blood clotting. It is activated by Factor XIa in the intrinsic pathway and by Factor VIIa in the extrinsic pathway. The activated enzyme (Factor IXa) then goes on to activate Factor X.
