European Respiratory Society

The European Respiratory Society (Ee-yu-roh-pe-an Res-pi-ra-to-ry So-ci-e-ty, abbreviated as ERS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of lung health and alleviation of suffering from respiratory disease. It was established in 1988 and is headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Etymology

The term "European Respiratory Society" is derived from its geographical location (Europe) and its primary focus (Respiratory). The word "respiratory" comes from the Latin respirare which means "to breathe". The term "society" is derived from the Latin societas, which means "association" or "alliance".

History

The European Respiratory Society was founded in 1988 with the aim of promoting research, sharing knowledge and improving clinical practice in respiratory medicine. It has grown to become one of the leading medical organizations in Europe, with members from over 160 countries worldwide.
