Esthesic and poietic

Esthesic and Poietic

Esthesic and Poietic are terms used in the field of semiotics and musicology to describe two different aspects of the communication process in art and music. These concepts were introduced by the French semiotician Jean-Jacques Nattiez.

Esthesic

The term Esthesic refers to the reception and interpretation of a work of art or music by the audience. It encompasses the various ways in which a piece can be perceived, understood, and appreciated by different individuals. The esthesic process is subjective and can vary widely among different listeners or viewers, influenced by their personal experiences, cultural background, and individual sensibilities.

Poietic

The term Poietic pertains to the creation and production of a work of art or music. It involves the processes, techniques, and intentions of the artist or composer in bringing a piece into existence. The poietic aspect focuses on the creative act and the decisions made by the creator during the production of the work.

Relationship Between Esthesic and Poietic

The relationship between the esthesic and poietic dimensions is central to understanding the full scope of the communicative process in art and music. While the poietic aspect deals with the creation and the intentions behind a work, the esthesic aspect deals with how that work is received and interpreted by an audience. The interaction between these two dimensions can reveal much about the nature of artistic communication and the ways in which meaning is constructed and conveyed.

Applications

These concepts are widely used in the analysis of music, literature, visual arts, and other forms of cultural production. They provide a framework for examining the different stages of the communicative process, from creation to reception, and for understanding the complex dynamics between artists and their audiences.
