Elyn Saks (pronounced: /ˈɛlɪn saks/) is a distinguished mental health law scholar and advocate, best known for her work in the field of schizophrenia and her personal experiences with the condition.
Etymology
The name Elyn is of Greek origin, meaning "sun ray" or "shining light". The surname Saks is of Jewish Ashkenazic origin, denoting someone from Saxony in Germany.
Biography
Elyn Saks was born in Miami, Florida, in 1955. She was diagnosed with schizophrenia in her early twenties, while she was a student at Oxford University. Despite her diagnosis, she went on to achieve great success in her academic and professional life. She is currently a professor at the University of Southern California Gould School of Law, where she specializes in mental health law and is the founder of the Saks Institute for Mental Health Law, Policy, and Ethics.
