Ehud Olmert
Ehud Olmert (born 30 September 1945) is an Israeli politician and lawyer who served as the Prime Minister of Israel from 2006 to 2009. He was a member of the Kadima party and previously served as the Mayor of Jerusalem and as a Knesset member.
Early Life and Education
Ehud Olmert was born in Binyamina-Giv'at Ada, then part of the Mandatory Palestine. He grew up in a family with a strong Zionist background. Olmert attended the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he earned a degree in psychology, philosophy, and law.
Political Career
Olmert began his political career as a member of the Likud party, serving in the Knesset from 1973. He held various ministerial positions, including Minister of Health and Minister of Industry, Trade and Labor.
Mayor of Jerusalem
In 1993, Olmert was elected as the Mayor of Jerusalem, a position he held until 2003. During his tenure, he focused on urban development and infrastructure projects.
Prime Minister of Israel
Olmert became the acting Prime Minister of Israel in 2006 following the incapacitation of Ariel Sharon. He officially assumed the role later that year. His tenure was marked by the 2006 Lebanon War and efforts to advance the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.
Legal Issues
In 2014, Olmert was convicted of bribery in connection with the Holyland affair, a major corruption scandal. He was sentenced to prison, becoming the first former Israeli prime minister to serve jail time.
Personal Life
Olmert is married to Aliza Olmert, an artist and writer. They have five children. He is known for his passion for sports, particularly basketball.
