Domestic violence against men

Domestic violence against men (pronunciation: /dəˈmɛstɪk ˈvaɪələns əˈɡenst mɛn/) refers to acts of violence or abuse perpetrated against men in a domestic setting, such as in marriage or cohabitation.

Etymology

The term "domestic violence" originates from the Latin word domesticus, meaning "belonging to the house", and the Latin word violentia, meaning "violence". The phrase "against men" is self-explanatory, referring to the target of the violence.

Definition

Domestic violence against men includes but is not limited to physical violence, sexual violence, emotional abuse, and economic deprivation. It is a form of intimate partner violence that can occur in heterosexual or same-sex relationships.

Prevalence

While domestic violence is often seen as a problem primarily affecting women, men can also be victims. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, one in nine men in the United States experiences physical violence from an intimate partner.

Impact

The impact of domestic violence against men can be severe, including physical injuries, psychological trauma, and in extreme cases, death. Men who experience domestic violence may also face societal stigma and may be less likely to report the abuse due to fear of not being believed or taken seriously.
