Disorder (/dɪsˈɔːrdər/) is a term used in the medical field to describe a state of functional or mental abnormality or disturbance. It is derived from the Middle English word "disordre", which means lack of order or regular arrangement.
Types of Disorders
There are several types of disorders, including:
- Mental Disorder: A mental disorder, also called a mental illness or psychiatric disorder, is a behavioral or mental pattern that causes significant distress or impairment of personal functioning.
- Physical Disorder: A physical disorder (also known as a medical condition) is a condition that affects the physical body. It could be a disease, injury, disability, or disorder.
- Genetic Disorder: A genetic disorder is a health problem caused by one or more abnormalities in the genome. It can be caused by a mutation in a single gene (monogenic) or multiple genes (polygenic) or by a chromosomal abnormality.
- Eating Disorder: Eating disorders are mental and physical illnesses that are characterized by abnormal eating habits that negatively affect a person's physical or mental health.
- Sleep Disorder: Sleep disorders, also known as somnipathy, are conditions that affect the ability to sleep well on a regular basis.
