Crisis Text Line (pronounced: /ˈkraɪsɪs tɛkst laɪn/) is a non-profit organization providing free mental health texting service to those in crisis in the United States.

Etymology

The term "Crisis Text Line" is a combination of the words "crisis", "text", and "line". "Crisis" (from the Greek κρίσις - krisis) refers to a time of intense difficulty or danger. "Text" refers to the act of sending a written message via mobile device, and "line" refers to a direct phone line used for communication.

Function

Crisis Text Line operates 24/7 and connects texters with trained crisis counselors who can provide immediate support for those going through a crisis. The service is confidential and free of charge.
