Suicide prevention

Suicide prevention (pronunciation: soo-uh-sahyd preh-ven-shuhn) is a term used to describe the collective efforts of local citizen organizations, health professionals and related professionals to reduce the incidence of suicide.

Etymology

The term "suicide prevention" is derived from the Latin suicidium, from sui caedere, "to kill oneself", and the English term "prevention", from the Latin praeventio, "to act before".

Definition

Suicide prevention includes two main types of actions: those aimed at preventing conditions that can lead to suicide (such as depression, loneliness, and substance abuse), and those aimed at providing individuals with the knowledge and skills to recognize the warning signs of suicide and take appropriate action.
