Consent

Consent (/kənˈsɛnt/) is a term used in various fields, most notably in law and medicine, to denote the act of voluntarily agreeing to something, especially after thorough consideration and understanding of all relevant facts and potential consequences.

Etymology

The term "consent" originates from the Latin word "consentire", which means "to feel together". It was first used in the English language in the 13th century.

In Law

In the field of law, consent refers to the voluntary agreement to or acceptance of something proposed or desired by another. Consent in law can be either expressed or implied. Expressed consent is clearly and unmistakably stated, while implied consent is inferred from a person's actions and the facts and circumstances of a particular situation.

In Medicine

In medicine, consent is a patient's agreement for a health care professional to provide treatment. This can be given verbally, non-verbally, or in writing. Informed consent, a term often used in healthcare, refers to the process by which the treating health care provider discloses appropriate information to a competent patient so that the patient may make a voluntary choice to accept or refuse treatment.
