The City University of New York (CUNY) is a public university system in New York City. It is the largest urban university system in the United States, consisting of 25 campuses: eleven senior colleges, seven community colleges, one undergraduate honors college, and seven postgraduate institutions. CUNY was established in 1961 and is governed by the Board of Trustees.

History

CUNY was created in 1961 by the New York State Legislature as a means to provide higher education to the residents of New York City. The university traces its roots to the founding of the Free Academy of the City of New York in 1847, which later became the City College of New York.
