Chittagong (pronunciation: /tʃɪtəɡɒŋ/) is a major coastal city and financial center in southeastern Bangladesh. The city has a population of more than 2.5 million while the metropolitan area had a population of over 4 million, making it the second largest city in the country. It is the capital of an eponymous district and division.
Etymology
The name Chittagong is an anglicized version of Chatgaon, which is believed to have been derived from the Bengali words "chatta" (meaning "cloth") and "gaon" (meaning "village"). The city was known as Islamabad during the Sultanate period. It gained the name Chittagong under British rule in the 18th century.

Chittagong is home to several notable medical facilities including the Chittagong Medical College Hospital, the second largest medical college hospital in Bangladesh. Other significant medical institutions include the Chittagong General Hospital, Holy Crescent Hospital, and the Bangladesh Institute of Tropical and Infectious Diseases.
