Chennai (pronunciation: /ˈtʃɛnnaɪ/), formerly known as Madras (pronunciation: /məˈdrɑːs/), is the capital city of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
Etymology
The name Chennai is derived from Chennapattinam, named after Damarla Chennappa Nayakudu, a Nayaka ruler. The English built a factory and named it the Madrasapattinam. The region was then known as Madras until 1996 when it was changed back to Chennai.
