Caviid betaherpesvirus 2
A virus affecting guinea pigs
Caviid betaherpesvirus 2 (CavHV-2) is a species of virus in the genus Cytomegalovirus, which is part of the subfamily Betaherpesvirinae within the family Herpesviridae. This virus primarily infects guinea pigs, and it is used as a model organism for studying cytomegalovirus infections in humans.
Virology
Caviid betaherpesvirus 2 is a double-stranded DNA virus with a large genome typical of the Herpesviridae family. Like other betaherpesviruses, it has a slow replication cycle and establishes lifelong latency in the host. The virus can reactivate under certain conditions, leading to viral shedding and potential transmission.
Pathogenesis
In guinea pigs, CavHV-2 can cause a range of symptoms, although many infections are asymptomatic. When symptoms do occur, they may include respiratory distress, weight loss, and lethargy. The virus is transmitted through direct contact with infected bodily fluids, such as saliva or urine.
Research and Model Organism
Caviid betaherpesvirus 2 is extensively used in research as a model for human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infections. The guinea pig model is particularly valuable because it allows for the study of congenital infections, which are a significant concern in human health. Researchers use this model to study viral pathogenesis, immune responses, and potential vaccine candidates.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Diagnosis of CavHV-2 infection in guinea pigs can be performed using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect viral DNA, as well as serological tests to identify antibodies against the virus. There is currently no specific antiviral treatment for CavHV-2, and management focuses on supportive care and prevention of transmission.
