A Cardiovascular Technologist (pronunciation: car-dee-oh-vas-cu-lar tech-nol-o-gist) is a healthcare professional who specializes in the use of non-invasive imaging technology to diagnose and treat diseases of the cardiovascular system.

Etymology

The term "Cardiovascular Technologist" is derived from three words: "cardio" which is Greek for heart, "vascular" which is Latin for pertaining to vessels, and "technologist" which is derived from the Greek word "technologia" meaning systematic treatment.

Role and Responsibilities

A Cardiovascular Technologist performs various diagnostic tests including echocardiograms, electrocardiograms, and vascular ultrasounds. They also assist physicians in invasive procedures such as cardiac catheterization and pacemaker implantation.

Education and Training

To become a Cardiovascular Technologist, one must complete a two-year associate degree or a four-year bachelor's degree in cardiovascular technology or a related field. This is followed by certification from a recognized body such as the Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) or the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS).
